Celebrating the CycleWays: Grey Lynn to New Lynn

Do you want to explore Grey Lynn and further afield using the cycleways? There are many safe new cycleways to get out west from Grey Lynn/Ponsonby. In April 2025, we did a social group ride to see how the routes link up, and can take you near and far by bike.

We met other local cyclists at the Bike Hub in Grey Lynn Park (next to the pump track) and then rode the joined up cycleways and quiet roads through Pt Chev and Waterview, to Bike Hub New Lynn for a coffee break (refreshments were great, thanks!), before heading back.

The ride is suitable for pushbikes and half the time on e-bikes. Some small slopes but mainly flat (approx 2 hrs total of cycling return if on a pushbike).

The Bike Hub Grey Lynn was open early for our ride from 9am for free bike checks and quick fixes before we set off.

Over coffee a few of us regular cyclists realised we had learnt a few new things on the ride

-Bike Hub Grey Lynn are good to ask about ebike niggles. No services or repairs for ebikes but good advice.
-Bike Hub Grey Lynn are not far away from an ebike trial scheme!!
– Riding west Grey Lynn to New Lynn is almost all on dedicated cycle paths. It’s very well sign posted.
– The AT website/ app has up-to-date cycle path info. Better than Google or printed maps.
Thanks to Auckland Transport for making all of this possible and for a safe, fun and enjoyable morning ride that had people trying something new.
