Grey Lynn Waste Away

Grey Lynn 2030 Waste Away (GLWA) are committed volunteers who take action to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill from our community.

GLWA has worked on many community waste projects.

In 2012 we did some projects for all of Waitemata and we are now using this as our name.

Plastic-free July
Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness of the amount of single-use disposable plastic in our lives and challenges people to do something about it. Waste Away has supported Plastic Bag Free July for the last three years.  We worked with local retailers to hold a plastic bag free day and had movie nights and created an installation that was displayed at the corner of Williamson Ave and Great North Road. Plastic bags are no longer available in many shops.

Wasters at the market
On  Sunday mornings you will find Lynn Green at the local Grey Lynn Farmers Market. Since the beginning of the Grey Lynn Farmers Market Waste Way have been there talking to our communit about waste, encouraging people to try ways to limit their waste to landfill. We promote the practice of using worm farms or bokashi buckets to divert food waste from landfill.

Battery Collection Bucket at the Grey Lynn Farmers Market
A reminder that the Waste Away group provides a Battery Collection Bucket at the Grey Lynn Farmers’ Market. Bring along your household alkaline, button, NiCad, rechargeable, lithium and “other” batteries. Just a warning that old lithium batteries have been known to spontaneously burst into flame, especially when they get a bit wet. So be careful about keeping them around the house. Visit www.ecobatteries.co.nz for NiMH rechargeable batteries and chargers.

Bra Collection at the Grey Lynn Farmers Market.
We have a pink collection bin at the Farmers Market to collect used bras that are still in a good condition.  These are donated to women in the Pacific Islands that do not have access to bras. We collect for the (cleverly named) Project Uplift.

eWaste Collection Days

We ran many eWaste Collection Days around Waitemata. We helped find the venues to run these days and then partnered with EchoTech to do the collection.

2025 Update

The Waste Away Stall at the Grey Lynn Farmers Market has changed focus for 2025.
Still selling the favourite Rethink String Bags and Fantail Bags, which fly all over the world, the change
is reflecting Our Kind Community by supporting local community groups with the sale of a variety of
items lovingly made by volunteers: Not Paper Towels, Baby Change Bags, Change Mats, Merino Baby
Wraps and Hats, Bibs, Tea Towels, Hankies, Silk Scarves and Crochet/knitted items.

Making Good are volunteers who make beautiful things for babiespe ople in need such as Woven
Earth. The $$ from the sale of their items on the stall all goes back to them for purchasing more
merino and supplies.

Charity Crochet Knit are a lovely group who make beanies for Orange Sky and clothing for Premmie
babies.

All profit from Global Soap sales (handmade in Nelson) goes to your choice of community group:Charity Crochet Knit, Grey Lynn Farmers Market, Kelmarna Community Farm, Making Good or
Waste Away.Swing by the stall, say Hi and share some kindness with a beautiful gift for a new baby or for a friend.
