Urban Ark – Waitemata
Thousands of pests have been removed from Waitemata thanks to Urbran Ark which receives funding from Albert-Eden and Waitematā local boards.
When Welllpark Streamers started our ecological restoration at Wellpark Reserve we worked largely on our own. The plants were supplied by Auckland Council. They arrived. We planted them. Nearly 20 years on they are looking splendid!
Then Urban Ark – Manawa Taiao arrived who have given expert support to our volunteer group helping our native plant and bird life flourish. They provide us with tools, resources and advice for pest trapping, weeding and planting, along with educating us on local ecology – so we don’t plant and do the wrong thing!
Urban Ark recently celebrated its fifth birthday, and in that time nearly 12,000 pests have been caught in traps distributed to volunteers.
Trapping and weed control is important because introduced pest plants and animals have are terrible for the growth of our native flora and fauna. Rats, mice, hedgehogs and possums afferct our native biodiversity. They eat the new plants flowers and the birds eggs
Urban Ark has mainly been focussed in the Albert Eden area but their remit now goes over all of Waitemata. If you want to restore and care for your park in Waitemata – do reach out to Urban Ark.
