Grey Lynn Community Centre – Hard to Recycle Drop Off Point
The Grey Lynn Community Centre has made significant strides in waste minimisation, demonstrating a strong commitment to reducing its environmental impact. Through various initiatives and partnerships, the centre actively diverts its own waste from landfills and also encourages responsible, better disposal for the community by offering collection services.

Soft Plastics Recycling
Recognising the challenge of soft plastic waste, the centre provides a dedicated collection point in its foyer. Community members can drop off clean, empty, and dry soft plastics like bags and bubble wrap, which are then processed through The Packaging Forum’s Soft Plastics Recycling Scheme.
Battery Recycling: To prevent hazardous materials from ending up in landfills and causing potential fires in waste trucks and recycling facilities, the Grey Lynn Community Centre offers a battery recycling service. Partnering with Phoenix Recycling Group – there is a designated collection unit in the foyer for various household batteries. This service ensures the safe and correct recycling of these items.
Cans for Kai:The centre participates in the Kai Ika initiative Cans for Kai. By providing a collection bin for aluminum drink cans, they support food rescue efforts. Every kilogram of cans collected helps provide up to 12 meals for those in need.
Our Grey Lynn Community Centre actively tracks its waste diversion efforts and makes this information. This demonstrates the commitment to transparency and allows people to see the positive impact of their initiatives. As of March 2025, they have achieved a 76% diversion rate ot the centres own waste from landfill (excluding batteries and soft plastics).
By providing accessible recycling options and actively engaging in waste reduction initiatives, the Grey Lynn Community Centre plays a vital role in making it easier to be environmentally responsible.
