Mike Howie and Freida Margolis

Mike Howie is the owner of Freida Margolis, a laid-back neighborhood bar located at 440 Richmond Road in Grey Lynn, Auckland. He established the bar in 2012 in a former butcher shop called “West Lynn Organic Meats,” the sign of which still hangs outside.

Freida Margolis is known for its eclectic and unpretentious atmosphere, offering craft beers, well-priced wines, and classic cocktails. It’s a popular spot with both indoor and outdoor seating. On sunny days, the outdoor area is bustling, while evenings can get lively with occasional singalongs led by Mike Howie on the upright piano and live music gigs, most Thursday nights, in the intimate space. The bar also features a constantly changing selection of craft beers from around New Zealand.

Mike Howie himself is described as a “big music buff.” He sometimes plays vintage vinyl records at the bar and hosts live music from various musicians. Before owning Freida Margolis, he traveled the world playing the piano and hosted travel tours in South America.
