Winter Planting: Grey Lynn Ecological Restoration Projects May 2025

Late Autumn is the perfect time for planting, weeding.  Consequently there are 3 working bees in the next few weeks.

The best time to plant native plants in Auckland is generally during the cooler months, from May to early Spring  This allows plants to establish their roots before the hotter, drier summer months. After the very dry summer, it’s currently easier to weed and to plant.
  • Autumn (April-May):

This is a good time as the ground is still warm and the weather is relatively mild, allowing plants to establish roots before the winter rains.

  • Winter (June-August):
Winter is a good time to plant too as there’s plenty of moisture in the soil, and plants can get established before spring.
