Trash to Trade May 2019

Trash to Trade 2019 Successfully Concludes

In May 2019, the third installment of the Trash to Trade upcycling event series was held at multiple locations around the Grey Lynn neighbourhood of Auckland.  The event drew a crowd of 150 attendees from a wide cross-section of the local community.

At the event, exhibiting artisans utilised a variety of waste materials to create upcycled products.  They demonstrated how commonly wasted items can be turned into innovative new things, ranging from clothes to notebooks and even art.  Waste upcycling workshops were conducted by skilled professionals, giving members of the community and kids a chance to try something new.

Organiser and Grey Lynn 2030 Co-Chair, Brigitte Sistig, said “We are thrilled by the turnout and involvement from the community, artisans, and our supporting partners at Trash to Trade this year.  Upcycling gives us all the means transform waste into useful objects.  By doing so, we can all make a difference in cutting waste to landfill, make better use of our precious resources, and save money.”

Special thanks to the upcycling artists, volunteers, and supporting partners, including Pocket Bar, Auckland Libraries, Grey Lynn RSC, Tart Bakery, Grey Lynn Farmers Market and Car Boot Market, The Re-Creators, and Conscious Kids, for their help in making everything run smoothly.

Grey Lynn 2030 is committed to its core principle of taking action on climate change and will continue providing opportunities for community involvement in the area of waste minimisation. Watch this space for future activities and events!

What is upcycling?

Also known as creative reuse, upcycling is the process by which waste materials are transformed into new materials or quality products of environmental value.

What is Trash to Trade?

Growing out of 2018’s first Trash to Trade Competition, this event is an upcycling platform where people show their talent in transforming business waste into something attractive and usable. The upcycling concept is deeply embedded in the framework of sustainability, addressing the climate crisis and environmental problems like waste going to landfill.
