Cup Project
The Cup Project brought together local cafes and schools as well as local and NZ-wide organisations. The project aimed to reduce the amount of single-use takeaway coffee cups going to landfill from our Grey Lynn community.

During the challenging COVID-19 year of 2020, we started the 8-week feasibility study on 1 July, launching into Plastic FREE July.
Our awesome community created reusable coffee cups made from recycled glass jars, wrapped in cup cozies or heatbands from a variety of recycled materials.
These little awesome creations were dubbed “#KohaCup”.
Over 400 Koha Cups were made available in six local Grey Lynn cafés; (Ozone, Tart, Crumb, Bread & Butter, Urban Jungle and the Coffee Store at the Grey Lynn Farmers Market).
The concept is for people to take their morning coffee away from one of the participating cafes in a #KohaCup and bring it back the next time.
They swap out the used jar for a fresh one, and the used jar gets sterilised for future use. And(!) they get to hold on to their gorgeous handmade coffee cup sleeve and use it again!
The #KohaCup comes at no extra charge with the kaupapa of supporting our community to move away from single use.
